Homemade Vanilla Extract Recipe
Hi friends, today I am going to share one of the easiest recipes imaginable! If you like to bake, vanilla extract is an essential pantry item to have and stock up on. I love using homemade vanilla extract in cake recipes, muffins, cookies, pancakes, waffles, plant milks, and coffee drinks.
It is a game changer when you are making dessert, and I feel like homemade vanilla extract takes homemade recipes to a whole new level! You can imagine how quickly I go through my homemade vanilla extract.
To make vanilla extract, you need to have a nice sized glass bottle like this one. I like it because it creates a nice airtight seal, and once the vanilla extract is ready, you can easily pour with this bottle.
Plan in advance
If you plan on using homemade this in your recipes, plan in advance. Although you can prepare it in just under 5 minutes, you do need to wait about 40-50 days before it is ready to be used in pastry recipes. I like making vanilla extract in bulk, it makes a great gift for family and friends, especially if you have it ready for the holidays when everyone seems to bake more!
You will also need good quality vanilla beans. I always get these and they don’t disappoint! The other ingredient you will need is vodka. It does not have to be any special type of vodka, it can be any inexpensive one , just make sure it’s a unflavored.
| Prep Time: 5 minutes | |
| Servings: 2 cups (96 tsp) | Total Time: 40+ Days |
| Ingredients 8 Vanilla beans 2 Cups vodka |
| Instructions 1. First slice vanilla beans in half carefully without cutting all the way through the bottom. (*See video below) 2. Next, open the vanilla beans from where you slice it and scrape out the vanilla seeds with the tip of your knife. 3. Place the seeds onto the opening of the glass bottle and use the knife to push the seeds down into the bottle. 4. Once all the vanilla seeds are sliced and scraped, add all the seeds along with the vanilla beans into the bottle and pour the vodka until almost full. 5. You then shake the bottle every day for a few seconds until the color darkens resembles dark tea. (I start using my vanilla extract after 40 days of shaking it, and I continue to shake it for an additional 10 days. I will show you what my vanilla extract looks like on day 40 when it is ready.) |
