Make Your Own Pumpkin Spice in 5 Minutes
Pumpkin Spice makes me so happy! I get so excited when the season changes from Summer to Fall! I love Summer, but I also love Fall, the leaves, the trees, the transition from warm, humid air, to subtle hints of a cool breeze the sneaks up and takes my breath away. To me, Fall is symbolic of accepting change, and letting go of things that no longer serve me, and allowing and welcoming new possibilities, wisdom, and growth to come into my life.
I’ve learned that change can be uncomfortable at times and may not always feel uplifting, but strength, patience, and the act of allowing really help me to grow, to become wiser, and acknowledge the discomfort that arises, as well as, allow it to run its course without trying anything to change or wish it away. This, of course, takes constant practice and is never linear or perfect, but awareness really helps the process.
So now that Fall is here, I am eager to to talk about all things pumpkin and share this pumpkin spice recipe with you so you can sprinkle this joyous recipe into your baking. Pumpkin spice is abundantly available in most grocery stores during the Fall and then disappears. Sure you can purchase it to make seasonal recipes, but if you have the knowledge and tools to make your own pumpkin spice, you can have it readily available whenever your heart desires!
What recipes can I put pumpkin spice in?
I like to add it to my coffee, lattes, my all time favorite pumpkin bread, muffins, plant milks, yogurt, and cookies . You can even add it to winter soups and stews! What I also like is that my pumpkin spice recipe makes enough to have at hand when I need it, but not so much that I end up storing it for years. Spices do tend lose their freshness when stored too long so making small amounts is practical and ensures freshness.
Making your own pumpkin spice is very easy, you just need a few simple ingredients such as cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg. I highly recommend getting whole nutmeg and grating it fresh yourself. The fresh aroma of a whole nutmeg will have you doing twirls around your house! To grate nutmeg, I simply use a lemon zester, and grate it into a small bowl and then measure it. Once I started doing this, I NEVER went back to buying powdered nutmeg!
How much pumpkin spice will this recipe make?
This pumpkin spice recipe will yield approximately 5 3/4 tsp of pumpkin spice, and a little goes a long way. Once you make it, seal it in an airtight container (preferably glass) and store at room temperature. It will be freshest to use within 6 months, and acceptable up to a year. I hope you enjoy Fall and Winter baking with this homemade pumpkin spice recipe!
